Deterra System
The Deterra Drug Deactivation and Disposal System seeks to prevent substance misuse through safe, permanent disposal of unused prescription and over the counter medications. Deterra renders pills, patches, liquids, creams, and films inert, unavailable for misuse, and safe for the environment. In a 3-step process, an individual deactivates the drugs by putting them in a Deterra pouch or container, adding water, shaking and throwing it away.
The Courage Center recently collaborated with Lexington, South Carolina faith-based organizations as part of its #CourageOverStigma campaign. This campaign targeted six Lexington County drug overdose “hotspots” to reduce access to unused, expired, and unwanted medications through distribution of Deterra® Drug Deactivation System Pouches.
More than 1,000 Deterra pouches and awareness materials were distributed to houses of worship reaching residents of Cayce-West Columbia, Gaston, Irmo, Red Bank, South Congaree, and Swansea.
The following video was produced at the start of our Deterra campaign. One of our supporters, Brock Sansbury, does an excellent job in this video showing how the Deterra system works.
