Team member Claude Baldwin shares more stories from the road as our Coordinated Overdose Response and Engagement program rolled on this week: "The team visited eight homes today, and trained individuals how to use life-saving Narcan at three homes. One mother related that the after effects of COVID seemed to put her daughter in a deep rut of depression and anxiety. This reflects what we have heard anecdotally from colleagues in other states - we are seeing a sort of second-hand trauma for our youth in the wake of the pandemic. We were able to provide the contact information of a certified peer support specialist to mom - a welcome relief. And conversations about our substance-free social events and community of youth in recovery were a welcome surprise. Regardless of rain, sleet, shine - or on this day earthquakes - we impressed on the people we visited that there are people in this community that care. Medical school hasn’t always viewed substance misuse as a medical issue, leaving students not properly equipped to understand, treat, and support those in recovery. A report funded by Stanford proposes that medical schools should be increasing their education around addiction treatment. Chapin area families! Our Family Support Meetings move to Thursdays starting June 2nd. Join us from 7-8PM at 844 Columbia Avenue (St. Jacobs Lutheran Church). We kick off our new Adolescent All-Recovery and Life Skills meetings June 2nd from 7-8PM (same location). All Recovery meetings welcome all who struggle with addiction, are affected by addiction, or support recovery. Thursday was Stay Safe This Summer day at Spring Valley High School in Richland School District Two . The Courage Center, LRADAC team member Kimberly Myers, and Daniel Buckson with The Forrester Center for Behavioral Health shared information about the dangers of vaping, the importance of making good choices, and substance abuse disorder resources.
