Team member Claude Baldwin shares more stories from the road as our Coordinated Overdose Response and Engagement program rolled on this week: "The team visited eight homes today, and trained individuals how to use life-saving Narcan at three homes. One mother related that the after effects of COVID seemed to put her daughter in a deep rut of depression and anxiety. This reflects what we have heard anecdotally from colleagues in other states - we are seeing a sort of second-hand trauma for our youth in the wake of the pandemic. We were able to provide the contact information of a certified peer support specialist to mom - a welcome relief. And conversations about our substance-free social events and community of youth in recovery were a welcome surprise. Regardless of rain, sleet, shine - or on this day earthquakes - we impressed on the people we visited that there are people in this community that care. Medical school hasn’t always viewed substance misuse as a medical issue, leaving students not properly equipped to understand, treat, and support those in recovery. A report funded by Stanford proposes that medical schools should be increasing their education around addiction treatment. We kick off our new Adolescent All-Recovery and Life Skills meetings June 2nd from 7-8PM (same location).
